Alrightly, I'll just say it - I sold my 100-400 for the 70-200 f/2.8 II and I won't look back. The lens is way, way better than the 100-400...and in my opinion when the 1.4 ext is added on it, it is still sharper than the 100-400. I've also used the 70-300L is quite nice.
I know a few Canon users who have done the same thing.

So how does the 150-500 rate as a spotting lens, is the AF good enough to track during take off. I looks to be pretty sharp at 500mm.

That will not really help, as I need more then 300mm of reach and with a 1.4 TC it will be less then 300mm.
