Re: The Biggest Plane That ISP Can Handle?
I have watched the Northeastern DC8's arrive and depart from ISP on many occasions. The 757 was a scheduled visitor on Eastern way back when too.
I am almost certain that I did see an Eastern A300 there once or twice--it did have capability of operating under 300,000 lb.
I recall the DC8's used almost every inch of runway, and I also think that they operated there before the runway was extended to 7000 ft but I could be wrong.
I also remember the 727's --I rode quite a few out of there in my day.

Art the Runway indeed was only 6000 feet when Northeastern DC-8's where everyday visitors and yes those birds used a lot of runway especially with 204 paxs on board.

They didn't replace the old terminal, it is still there. They did replace one of the concourse wings but the west wing is still there.
I know that, I tried to say that in my message, but I must have said it bad so that you got confused.

On a 7,000 foot runway, a 747 can land, but with the extra weight of fuel, might not be able to take off again.
Exactly, If I remember right ISP was trying to expand the runway but was getting grief from the surrounding neighbors. Probably a moot point because ISP doesn't seem to need anything more than a 737 at present.

KISP
VP Dick Chaney is in town
I found out from my sister in law that "Air Force 1" was at Macarthur airport here on Long Island N.Y. and headed out to go get some pictures. I knew that it had to be the 757 because she kept saying how big it was and they do not have taxiways with a heavy enough weight requirement for the 747 (or so I have been told).
Macarthur airport is not a spotter friendly airport. I keep getting lucky. I went there and stayed there for about 1 hour, found out it was AirForce 2 and took some pictures. Soon I had leave to get my son from daycare. After picking him up I headed straight back to the same place I was. At that time in his life, Nick only wanted to see copters. I wanted to look at this beautiful 757 and he wanted an R-22!
I took over 40 pictures when they powered the 757 up to pull the plane around for when the VP Cheney gets back. The ground crew did not think of moving the two ladders behind the tail. .5 seconds and they shot a good 30 feet!
(Have shots of that too) ;)
At that point I grabbed my son and yelled hand on , WINDY! I watched as I am looking at the rear of the engines as #2 (At High Power) passes us. I can hear the exaust coming and Bam! it threw my son into me and we went back on my a$$ real fast!
Nick did not like the wind! and did not want to stay any longer.

Dont forget that DC-10s, L-1011s and A300s also used to land at LGA

But the taxiways were never made to handle that kind of weight.

Hi Guys
Long time reader.
First time poster.
Back in the early 90's I attended a number of airshows at the Schenectady County airport in upstate NY. The airport has a 7,000 ft main runway and I would say it is equvilant to Republic airport.
They always had some great displays ((MATS Connie, Save-a-Connie Constellation, Blue Angels, Thunderbirds and other greats).
They always had a C5 Galaxy that would come up from Stewart, but the main attraction one year was a British Airways Concorde.
I'm sure they came in lightly loaded, but if they landed there, ISP would be no problem.
