Emb 170/190 family aircraft are very touchy as far as the nose gear goes. There are a great deal of squat switches and sensors in the nose gear that drive faults constantly. It's sensitive enough that if you pop a towbar while it is hooked up in motion its an automatic jack and gear swing to verify for no damage. Republic learned that lesson the hard way a few times early on in the delivery of the 170's when they would depart and than on arrival get NG steering faults and false negatives on the nose gear with the gear down selection. I can recall one instance of this at SRQ where the RAH flight from DCA had to do a low flyby to verify gear down at SRQ because of it. Embraers are very electric in nature and by virtue seem to need a little extra care and attention to things that would be very simply overlooked on most other aircraft types. Air Canada due to the climates they fly in also tends to have FTS and STS faults as well as pack bleed issues that are caused by the very cold temps. Its not soo much a testemant to bad physical design as much as using too much electronic and remote sensor equipment in hard moving devices. Still great airplanes, you just need to understand what they are doing and why.
