CLT 4/30

Went out to CLT for awhile today, and I actually shot more than 800 pictures...:redface:. Anyway, the light was pretty harsh and killed the white balance...I think I need to invest in some white balance cards! What are your guys' thoughts on them? Any that you would recommend?

Every time I let my dad use the camera, something good happens! This SkyWest CRJ comes in, and last time, he got a LH 340 Star Alliance on a go around after touching down that hit the top on JP.

Saw her landing on 18L, and acarsd picked her up as leaving at 6:10 to MMUN. We stuck it out, and here she is on a delayed taxi (about 20 minutes late). Who doesn't like a smiling plane though?

white balance looks good...i'm sure Manny will chime in here shortly but white balance is usually not an issue if you're editing in photoshop, it can generally be taken care of in a couple clicks if you're shooting JPEG or if you're shooting RAW simply use the WB slider in the cameraraw dialogue. To me the one shot you posted that you think has a WB issue just appears to be overexposed a bit...maybe your metering system was measuring values more from the shadow areas than the midtones and highlights. Great shots nonetheless!

Okay, thanks for the idea, you're probably correct since by the end of the trip, I was underexposing all of the pictures by 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop, and they looked a lot better, although dark. I need Manny lessons in Photoshop lol. Thanks though!

a quick and not always sure-fire way to balance the tones or at least get a good start is using either the curves or levels dialogue and using the midtones (gray) eye dropper and clicking on an area or pixel if you can get in that close that SHOULD be 18% gray. I've found it usually works pretty well to get you close to where you want to be.

What were your shutter speeds if I may ask? It would seem that they were too slow possibly causing the overexposures.

These were all taken at 1/800-1/1250 on some of them with ISO 200.

looks good to me.... WB is correct i think.... Nice catches. Calibrate your screen czu maybe thats the problem ?

try iso 100. Seems very blown out for that fast

Check out the ones that you had the -.67 exposure bias. They definitely were exposed better. As Brandon said, you don't need anything higher than ISO 100 in sunlight like that. However, you weren't hitting the limits of the shutter speed so you're camera was intentional getting those exposures. The best way to combat this is to first choose the right metering mode for your situation, then adjust EV accordingly after you've taken some shots.

Thanks Brandon and Mark. Right now I'm on Tv on a Canon, which I think is the right mode from my look at the manual, right?

You may want to try switching to Av mode. I am shooting a Canon and I put it in Av mode and set it to around 7.1 - 11 and let it determine the shutter speed based on the exposeure comp.

Great set, brings back memories when I worked for Piedmont/Henson in Florence, SC and transited CLT at least twice a week on our Dash 8's
