While on a current business trip I had an opportunity to do a little spotting by Dulles (IAD). These images were taken from the National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center vistor parking lot. As far as distance from the approaching aircraft (which were using 1R), I would compare this to being at the mounds.
