Reminder - 9/11 Tribute in Lights
Once again this year, there will be the Tribute In Lights memorial on September 11. The two sets of lights, to mark the location of the the World Trade Center, will be illuminated on Friday night. They will be visible from dusk in lower Manhattan. I've shot them several times from a couple of different locations - for anyone interested in going out, here are a few tips.
Brooklyn Bridge Park: On the Brooklyn waterfront (in the area known as DUMBO) the park is located between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. It's a popular spot, so get there early:

Last year, I was in NJ during the day, so I shot from the Jersey City waterfront. There is a large park/promenade along the Hudson facing Manhattan:

You can also see and shoot the lights from various vantage points in lower Manhattan itself, but be warned, it will be very crowded.

As far as shooting, typical night techniques apply - use a tripod or something else solid to brace your camera, a remote or self-timer to avoid camera shake, and bracket your shots. I will normally use ISO 100, a mid-range aperture (f/7.1 or f/8) for most shots, although I will sometimes close it down (f/16 or smaller) for starburst effects on the city lights.
I'm planning to go over to Liberty State Park, probably down near the south end, this year...

Re: Reminder - 9/11 Tribute in Lights
I'll be out probably on the Jersey City side again. Moose, as a heads up, in years past, LSP has been closed after dark. I guess not when you took that photo, though. :P
Re: Reminder - 9/11 Tribute in Lights
I hear there's going to be a new memorial dedicated in Newark tomorrow morning. Anyone going to that?
Re: Reminder - 9/11 Tribute in Lights
Yeah, I shot that in April, around 8pm, and there were still lots of folks around.
Re: Reminder - 9/11 Tribute in Lights
They run the tribute all night long. I normally get off work pretty late, and while there are people around, it's never really too crowded at 11pm or so.

Great shots, Moose! I need to get myself a decent tripod.

I hope weather cooperates
Re: Reminder - 9/11 Tribute in Lights
Moose wow those photos are very beautiful.
I use similar exposure times when i take photos of the river Thames.
On 21 Oct 2003 when i came to NYC i had a brilliant brilliant and magical time. But i didn't know Brooklyn Bridge Park existed. If i had done we would have gone there to get photos like yours.

Unfortunately, we had pretty lousy conditions tonight. I was at LSP before dark, and we had light rain, fog and low clouds all evening. I started out with the camera in a plastic bag with just the front of the lens poking out. Eventually the rain mostly stopped, but the clouds never lifted. Despite the conditions, there were 30 or so people at the north end of the park, and another dozen or so at the south end to see and/or photograph the lights. At 10pm, just as Bill was getting there, the park closed and they chased us all out.

I actually like the effect of the lights touching the bottom of the clouds.
Re: Reminder - 9/11 Tribute in Lights
Though the weather wasn't the greatest, it seems it made the lights shine very distinctly.
, Moose, I LOVE the yellow-ed panoramic shot.
Re: Reminder - 9/11 Tribute in Lights
Great shots, guys. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't have a chance to see them this year, but your pics made up for it.
