Meet the 1,400 jobless New York teachers still getting paid
It would seem like a pretty good gig: About 1,400 teachers in New York City are receiving full salaries and benefits even though they don't have permanent jobs. Two hundred and five of them have been without full-time work for three years. And they can continue receiving payments indefinitely even if they never secure new positions.

NYC's teacher's union rivals the MLB Player's Association in terms of its ridiculousness. The teachers might be more obscene since what they do actually impacts millions of lives.
I know a fair number of recently hired NYC teachers. The majority of them I wouldn't hire to sweep floors, nevermind guide a room full of young children. It's really frightening.

Very interesting timing. On Wednesday, the schools chancellor, citing budget cuts, announced a citywide teacher hiring freeze and directed principals to hire only from the reserve pool.
