FAA Approves Garbage Station by LGA
After what happened with geese recently at LGA, it's hard to believe that a Garbage-Transfer Station is planned right next to Rwy 31 at LGA. This would bring gulls, geese, etc to the area. Even stranger, the FAA has approved this. Are they waiting for another bird strike?
Re: FAA Approves Garbage Station by LGA
Where next to 31 are they planning to put this?
Re: FAA Approves Garbage Station by LGA
There's already been a big garbage dump next to LGA for some time. It's called College Point.
Re: FAA Approves Garbage Station by LGA
it's actually been there for a while, well before i started working at this airport 5 years ago. my understanding is that it's due to be expanded. what i find shocking is that i actually agree with mr. chuck schumer for the first time ever on an aviation issue... this thing should be shut down ocmpletely and not expanded.

Here you go. The blue roofed building is it.

This was operated for years as a open barge garbage transfer station. The station closed when Fresh Kills Landfill closed somewhere around the year 2000. As I understand it, the new operation will transport the garbage in enclosed containers rather than open barges. I would imagine that they had to study the bird issue to get this approved. I'm sure that the studies are public documents.

Interesting picture...plane on the active and one on short final. I wonder if Google took the shots on different dates, otherwise I'd say a very close call go around is about to take place.

I always wondered what that building was.

It looks like the land around the airport is part of a different set of images than the water, which is pretty common with Google Maps (after all, there's not a whole lot to see out on the water, most of the time). You can see what looks like the 'seam' between the two sets.

And I thought they were talking about the Central Terminal Building.
Re: FAA Approves Garbage Station by LGA
That blue building is 1 one block from where the engine parts fell yesterday.

There is another on the other side of the airport. Off the departure end of 4 . I dont know if it's still open, it is in Hunts Point , next to the Jail barge
Re: FAA Approves Garbage Station by LGA
We'd probably all do alot better in this State and City if we did away with the City Council and State Legislature.
