ROMULUS -- Passengers aboard Spirit Airlines Flight 417 on May 6 had a jolting start to their non-stop flight from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Fort Lauderdale.
Shortly after takeoff from Metro Airport, a small portion of the metal covering one of the Airbus A319's engines flew off, according to a preliminary report filed with the Federal Aviation Administration.
The pilots heard a strange noise, declared an emergency due to a possible engine failure and immediately diverted back to Metro Airport, where the plane landed safely, said FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory. [
