Artist to build four giant waterfalls in New York
Sounds like a good plan!
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Four giant waterfalls will be erected in New York for three months this summer in a public art project city officials hope will create $55 million in extra tourism revenue for the Big Apple.
The waterfalls, including one that will fall from the famed Brooklyn Bridge, are the brainchild of Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. Installation will cost $15 million, funded by private donations to New York's Public Art Fund.
"It's about seeing water in a different way," Eliasson told a news conference on Wednesday, unveiling plans for the waterfalls, which will range in height from 90 to 120 feet -- around the same as the Statue of Liberty from head to toe.

I heard bout this on Monday and am looking forward to it. But some advocates of the envoronment are already moaning over concerns of the effects on the surrounding aquatic environment.
(you know, we would want to distrub any radioactive fish and wastes ;) )

Sounds cool. Anyone here remember the geyser just south of Roosevelt Island?

I couldn't imagine anyone actually traveling to New York to see that.
I think it's a waste of our tax dollars (I read that this is city-funded), and I'm plenty angry about it in all honesty. Stocks are crumbling, recession, LET'S BUY FAKE WATERFALLS! Great job Bloomberg!
Fool.

Not sure how I feel about Bloomberg, but

You are correct that tourists will not visit New York to see the waterfalls, but, while they are in New York, they may pay to visit the sites.
Perhaps they can have a tour, "See the waterfalls of NYC tour" on one of those Red Tourist type buses. Tourist pay to see anything!

When "The Gates" installation was being planned for Central Park a few years ago I remember thinking it was idiotic, but when I actually saw it I thought it looked really cool. This looks sorta cool but I see enough waterfalls in unusual places during heavy rain storms...overpasses, train stations...
