NEW YORK - Sen. Hillary Clinton on Monday blasted the Bush administration as “one of the worst” in U.S. history and compared the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to a plantation where dissenting voices are squelched.

Speaking during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, Clinton also offered an apology to a group of Hurricane Katrina survivors “on behalf of a government that left you behind, that turned its back on you.”

Her remarks were met with thunderous applause by a mostly black audience at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem.

The House “has been run like a plantation, and you know what I’m talking about,” said Clinton, D-N.Y. “It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard.”

“We have a culture of corruption, we have cronyism, we have incompetence,” she said. “I predict to you that this administration will go down in history as one of the worst that has ever governed our country.”


A spokeswoman for the White House declined to comment and referred questions to the Republican National Committee.

RNC spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said: “On a day when Americans are focused on the legacy of Martin Luther King, Hillary Clinton is focused on the legacy of Hillary Clinton.”

Considering the NY Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch, I'm not surprised they would down-play the reaction to Hillary's comments.

Daily News: "...muted response..."

Newsday: "...thunderous applause..." (identical to AP story, even though it was written by Newsday staff writers "with wire services")

NY Times: Didn't mention the crowd's response.

The Post has actually been very pro-Hillary for at least the past year.

Well it's good to see Hillary putting her foot in her mouth just as bad as Dean and Kerry and the rest of her DNC buddies. If she is going to run in 08' she needs to pander to the black community. As far as Katrina goes I fault BUSH for not getting the military in there ASAP but the fact that town didn't evacuate everybody much earlier rests with Nagin and the Governor.

Lets see...How and why did Clinton White House security director Craig Livingstone, a former bar bouncer, manage to obtain 1,200 confidential FBI files on the Clintons' political enemies? Requisitons for the files had Clinton counsel Bernard Nussbaum's name on them. But Nussbaum told probers he was innocent.

We could go on...but the facts don't matter...

President Bush (Federal Government) can not order the Military into the State, unless the State surrenders power to the Federal Government. President Bush just about begged Gov. Blanco to do so, but, she did not want to appear weak.

The State (local government) controls the National Guard, neighboring State Government offered their National Guard, but, Gov. Blanco did not accept their offer.

If you are saying in hindsight, that President Bush should have marched into New Orleans with Active duty military, as long as the local government does not get out of the way, nightmare....

I wasn't saying Bush should have marched in there but order was lost pretty early on in this crisis. I would not want to have been in the superdome. Had to be horrible. Rememebr though this wall Bush and FEMA's fault. (sarcasim) Since Bush doesn't care about black people (more sarcasim) Though we all know the Mayor of NO and the Governor of Louisiana are to blame.
