I just watched Top Gun the other day and forgot how awesome it is. I was thinking of other great airplane related movies and was wondering what everyone else's favorites would be. My top three are:

1. Memphis Belle
2. Airport '75
3. Top Gun

Later,

Brian

"12 O'Clock High" Of course, to steal a line, it's about airplanes the way "Charlie's Angels" is about law enforcement.

I'd have to say Top Gun, although I didn't particularly enjoy the aviation aspects as much as the dialog...the scene where Maverick and Goose are telling the love interest about the Mig-28s is classic.

I have a lot more least-favorite aviation movies...every once in awhile, I get the urge to watch Pushing Tin, just to remember how bad it is...

Without a doubt the original 1970 Airport. Just an all around great movie. If anyone on here has never seen it you need to, and it does make the rounds on AMC and TCM cable networks from time to time.

Just to wet your appetite !

While Pushing Tin is pretty bad it does have some cool aviations scenes plus Angelina Jolie.

I love all the old movies on TCM. Tight now I'm watching "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" and recently watched "12 O'Clock High" and "Dive Bomber".
"Bridges at Toko-Ri" is also excellent as is "Task Force" with Gary Cooper.
For me the best helo related movies are "Birds of Prey", "Blue Thunder" and of course the Robert Duvall section of "Apocaypse Now".
"AirWolf" wasnt a movie though it did start out as a "Made For TV" movie and I still love watching old episodes of that.

The Final Countdown.
That was actually the F-14's first starring role, before Top Gun. One of the Navy guys at the Bethpage dedication last week was on board the Nimitz when they were filming it. Some great Tomcat vs. Zero dogfighting scenes!

I may have to spring for that DVD.

I forgot about the Final Countdown, I really need to see that one again. Airport 75 is my favorite of the Airport movies, but I do like them all. You can get all four of them in a DVD collection called the Terminal Pack at Best Buy for 14.99, which I highly recommend. I have never seen Pushing Tin, but I just watched a clip of it on YouTube and I may rent it someday. It looked bad, but interesting.

Came across this movie about ATC on another board. Called "Ground Control" from 1998 with Keifer Sutherland as a controller who had quit after a fatal crash
returns to save the day. New Years Eve, bad storm coming, shortage of controllers and some maniac sabotaging the system are all plot points. Interesting that
Keifers character is named "Jack" in this flick.

Airport '70, Airplane '80, The Aviator (Scorsese), Whisky Romeo Zulu and that educational film the Smithsonian Flight Museum used to show. And don't call me Shirley.

For vintage 50's military footage you can't beat "The Bridges At Toko-Ri" & "Strategic Air Command". Minus the lack or reality "Top Gun" is a no brainer for Tomcat scenes, but "The Great Santini" is a much better movie with USMC F-4's in the spotlight. Though only on DVD "Fighter Fling...The Directors Cut" gets my vote. :borat:
