US Airways-Southwest could
be latest merger sensation

Merger mania is sweeping the airline industry. Every carrier, it seems, is looking for a partner. Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines are talking. So are United Airlines and Continental Airlines.

Could a US Airways-Southwest Airlines merger be on the horizon?

An airline industry expert from Minneapolis thinks so — at least, he thinks a merger of Pittsburgh International Airport’s two busiest carriers looks great on paper.
“That would be one hell of an airline,” said Terry Trippler, of Minneapolis-based Trippler & Associates.
“It wouldn’t surprise me at all. I could definitely see it happening if the other mergers (Delta-Northwest and United-Continental) went through,” Trippler said.

It would never happen. Goes completely against SWA's business model.
Too many aircraft types, too many overlapping routes.

2 1/2 years after the America West merger, they still haven't ironed out their pilots union problems. Now imagine them having trash whatever progress they've made on that front and start over, only this time with a completely different union. Yeah, that'll happen.

And one more reason I don't see this happening is US is not interested in domestic growth, only International.

Cheers
